In President Tsai's second inaugural speech, she stated that cross-Strait relations have reached a historical turning point and she appealed to China’s leader to work with her to “jointly stabilize the long-term development of cross-Strait relations.” At China’s recently held “two meetings,” Beijing reaffirmed the Anti-Secession Law that was passed 15 years ago, and Politburo member Li Zhanshu warned that Taiwan independence is a “dead end,” and any challenge to the ASL “will be severely punished.” What are the prospects for managing cross-Strait differences in the next four years? What policies will Beijing and Taipei pursue, and what role will the United States play?
