Ratel Pan Hide Video On The Timbavati River - Kruger National Park Bird Hides
Ratelpan Hide, or Ratel Pan Bird Hide, is situated on the S39, a bit north of Timbavati Picnic Spot, and is along the beautiful Timbavati River. The word "Ratel" means Honey Badger, and this area is very good to see Honey Badger during the daylight hours. I have seen a few on the S39, and close by on the S127.
The Ratel Pan Hide itself is beautifully nestled away in the shade of large trees, and there is normally pools of water close by, even if the Timbavati River is dry, which it is generally about 8/9 months of the year, on a year of decent rainfall. You are likely to encounter the resident Blacksmith Lapwing and Egyptian Geese. There are often Elephant, Impala, Waterbuck and a few other birds around, and scanning the opposite river bank can be rewarding.
Luckily enough, when we filmed the Ratelpan Bird Hide, we had an excellent sighting of a Grey-headed Bush Shrike, which can be seen and heard in this video. This bird is known as the Spookvoel in Afrikaans, which literally means ghost bird, due to the ghostly-like bird call it makes.
Our aim is to show you all the hides in the Kruger National Park, at different times of year, so you know what to expect, and what you might see.
We hope you enjoy the video! Please like and subscribe for more Wildlife and Kruger National Park videos and content!
