Nearly 39,000 chickens from a poultry farm in the Philippines have been culled to stem an outbreak of bird flu. Early investigations point to migratory birds in the vicinity of the farm, which have been associated with bird flu in the past. The highly-infectious H5N6 strain had been detected at an egg-producing farm in Pampanga province. In the earlier outbreak in March, 1,500 quails had died and 12,000 others had to be culled. H5N6 can be transmitted to humans and was last detected in the country in 2017.
