Shadow chancellor Mel Stride has told Sky News he does not believe the Elgin Marbles should be returned to Greece, claiming they "belong in the British Museum".
Speaking to Sky's Kay Burley on the Breakfast show, Mr Stride said: "At the time that we took possession of those they went into a museum, that was legitimate. I think they're being kept very safely there."
The statues came from the 2,500-year-old Parthenon and have been displayed at the museum, in central London, for more than 200 years, after being removed by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century, when he was British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.
