If your plants didn’t come with instructions or you didn’t keep them…. Always check online resources for hardiness and what planting zone you are in. A simple search with hardiness or planting zone and your city and state in the search bar should let you know. Next look up the bulb/tuber/rhizome/crom and check it’s hardiness. Some things that are labeled as annuals in your area can be over wintered. To do this you dig them up and dust off the soil and let air dry in a dark cool area for until dry to the touch. I’ve stored bulbs in potting soil, old leaves, perlite, the list can go on. Kept in a cool dry area that will not feeeze and lightly moist or kept from drying to shriveled and they can be soaked before planting for better success. Things can always go wrong so this is an attempt at furthering the lifecycle of a plant. Some people don’t see it as being worth it or are fine with calling them annuals. I like to garden on a budget and like to offer options. If you are a zone or two away sometimes heavily mulching is enough to insulate and keep bulbs safe. Some plants require a cold period to bloom, tulips, hyacinth, peony, hardy hibiscus, and others do better or need a cold period to perform. To confuse us all there are even others that are from tropical environments that can be over wintered inside as a house plant.
