Backing up and restoring databases is core skill set of any database administrator. However most of the time this is automated and therefore the DBA doesn't really have enough of a clear understanding of the process that goes on in the background. In SQL 2017 Microsoft has released smart transactional log backups. This feature allows the database to differ transaction log backups if sufficient number of transaction logs have not yet accumulated. This reduces the overall IO over head on the desk and any network back up overhead as well. Side effect of this could be missing out on recovery point objective but keeping in mind that it can significantly bring down the number of backups that an organization might need to keep track off it is well worth exploring.
