STORYLINE
Iran will support Iraq's elected government without interfering in its internal affairs and is not allowing insurgents to enter Iraq from its territories, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said during a landmark visit to Baghdad on Tuesday.
Kharrazi's arrival marks the highest-level visit by an official from Iran to its Mideast neighbour since Saddam Hussein's ouster.
It comes amid a spike in terrorist attacks across Iraq fuelled by foreign
extremists and rival groups of Sunnis and Shiites, raiding fears the country is in the midst of a widening sectarian conflict.
Kharrazi held talks with the Iraqi leadership, meeting separately with President Jalal Talabani, Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, and Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari.
The Iranian envoy said it was his country's duty to support the political and economic reconstruction of Iraq and would do all it could to improve security conditions.
