We all know that the lack of joint attention is a huge issue for children on the autism spectrum. If we can’t get a child’s attention, they don’t engage with us. If we can’t get a child’s attention, we can’t show them what we want them to learn, if we can’t get a child’s attention, they will miss out on social interactions, language development, and many other skill developments that they need to be successful both in school and in life. What can we do?
I recently went to an Early Childhood program for students with disabilities who were being included in a typical early childhood classroom. One of the many strategies I saw that day was a very simple, yet powerful strategy to teach joint attention!
