Women flooded the streets of Minsk, Belarus on Saturday to protest the results of a contested election that saw President Alexander Lukashenko hang on to power, and demand the resignation of the authoritarian leader.
Marches and demonstrations of women have become a frequent feature of the protests, which broke out on Aug. 9, after the election in which Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, was declared the winner in a landslide victory.
Lukashenko’s opponents had formed a Coordination Council to drive the protests and push for a transition of power, but on Wednesday authorities detained one of the two last leading members of the council who remained free.
Belarus’ president has dismissed the opposition as Western stooges and rejected demands from the U.S. and European Union to engage in dialogue with the protesters.
