HarvestPlus, in partnership with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and Nigeria's Women in Agriculture Programme (WIA), organized a three-day capacity-building event for farmers and WIA officers in Niger State, promoting biofortified crops to improve the nutrition and earning capacity of rural women. The training themed, “Scaling Vitamin A Cassava and Vitamin A Maize to Improve Household Health and Income in Nigeria”, took place in September, 2022, and it focused on teaching entrepreneurial and innovative farming skills to women farmers and providing them with opportunities to generate income from the sale of their nutrient-enriched products.
The event trained over 40 women, half of whom will facilitate subsequent step-down training at community levels, and included a demonstration and distribution of start-up packages to local processors. The training prepared women extension agents to promote biofortified food recipes and support women in cooperatives, health facilities, their communities, and beyond to make good nutritional choices.
