Every time, EVERY TIME, we get used Merrill guitar, and we've handled more than a dozen now, we hear everyone here saying the same thing: "If you want a guitar that looks, sounds, and feels like a 1930′s Martin, but you do not want to spend $20,000 to $40,000 on a Martin of that vintage, then Jim Merrill captures that vibe as well as any modern builder, perhaps better."
It's true, a Merrill has that warm 30′s tone, warm bass, those scooped mids, and the soft clear trebles that run counter to today's gunslinger guitars which tend to have boosted midranges and piano-like trebles. We like both kinds of music: Country and Western, and we like both kinds of guitars. This is C-18 # KOA sunburst # 52.
It is very clean it could "almost" pass for new, but the consignor tells us it dates back about thirteen years.
The guitar sounds like an old hide glue Martin and the neck feels like a 1939 "V" shape Martin, one you might find on a D-18 of that era -- or an "Authentic" of the current era -- and it does have a traditional 1 and 3/4″ nut width and 2 and 5/16″ saddle spacing. It has the controlled articulate thunder and woody clarity of a GREAT dreadnought, without any of the hot spots, brilliance, or "shriek" of a boosted midrange. It is, in a word, "Martin-esque". Maybe this will say it better: If you play "Happy Birthday" on this guitar, you sound like David Grier. I'm just sayin....
As old-school, traditional D-18-style guitars go, this is as good as any darned thing we have EVER heard, which is to say, it is a mighty fine guitar.
It is here on CONSIGNMENT. It is cosmetically clean, except for some scarring, perhaps from a capo, on the back of the neck, which appears to have been sanded smooth. It cannot be felt, but it can be seen. Actually, it looks kinda cool.
While this thing is gorgeous, this guitar will look better when it gets some honest wear and tear on it. It;s a little too pretty right now. Its good looks are holding it back. It wants to get in, spit some blood, and dominate a jam session somewhere. Perhaps your neck of the woods?
The guitar has "Bluegrass" action @ 4/32″ -- truss rod is tight -- relief is @ .009″
ON CONSIGNMENT -- NO TRADES -- NO NONSENSE
