Alaska's Arctic is home to some of the most important wild lands on the continent, where many species of concern can be found. One of these animals and indicators of overall health of the ecosystem is the Smith's Longspur, a small and elusive songbird whose nesting grounds are in the high, treeless Arctic. Observations of these birds help land manager make decisions that affect the refuge, give us clues as to future impacts of climate change, and contribute to our understanding of the Arctic.
