The 7.8-magnitude earthquake in April 2015 and its aftershocks, which left nearly 9,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. The Nepal Red Cross Society, which is the largest humanitarian organisation in the Himalayan country, is helping survivors recover from the disaster. Its multi-pronged approach includes support for building new homes, restoring and improving health services and hygiene and helping people restore their livelihoods, as well as preparing for future disasters. More than 6,000 families have already received the first instalment of a cash grant, enabling them to start work on rebuilding better and safer homes.
