A top UN official has warned that an Israeli assault on Rafah - Gaza's southernmost city, could lead to a 'slaughter'. Rafah straddles the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Approximately 1.4 million Palestinians have now been pushed into Rafah by relentless Israeli bombing that has killed nearly 30,000 civilians. UN Humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths said Palestinians in Gaza were already suffering an 'assault that is unparalleled in its intensity, brutality and scope' and the consequences of an invasion of Rafah would be 'catastrophic'.
