(24 Sep 2018) With a regime change in Iran on their minds, dozens of protesters gathered a few blocks from the United Nations where world leaders were meeting for the 73rd General Assembly in New York.
Chanting "Down with dictators! Down with Rouhani!" the protesters expressed opposition to the "expansionism" of Iran and the policies of Iranian president Hassan Rouhani.
"Well, we are here as part of the organization of Iranian American communities and we are here to be the voice of the Iranian people to say that the Iranian regime is not representing the Iranian people," protester Jila Andalid said.
Michael Shojayi traveled from Atlanta, Georgia to join the protesters in New York City.
"We want the United Nations and also the National Security Council to hear our voice along with the Iranian people," Mr. Shojayi said. "We want to broadcast their voice, their will and their fight for democracy in Iran and regime change in Iran."
The protesters have a list of specific demands they want met. Among them, regime change.
"Iranian people want peace in the region, want freedom inside Iran," said protester Kazem Kazerounian. "And we are inviting anyone who's a peace person to join us to stop the atrocities -- the expansionism is of the Iranian regime."
The protesters said they would return the following day (25 Sept. 2018) to continue voicing their opposition to the Iran government.
