The shoulder abduction relief test, sometimes called Bakody’s test, is used to evaluate for cervical radiculopathy. The patient places their arm on top of their head and holds this position for 5-10 seconds. A positive test shows symptoms improve, suggesting relief of traction forces on the nerve. A negative or normal test symptoms worsen, suggesting myofascial tension on the nerve.
