The X-Ray Telescope on Hinode captured the X-class flare from Sept. 10, 2014. This classification of explosive power denotes the largest singular release of energy in the solar system and is typically associated with a coronal mass ejection. In the case of this event, the coronal mass ejection was partially Earth directed and led to a series of aurora observed around the planet on Sept. 13. (NASA/JAXA)
