Present Perfect, every student's favourite grammar tense! ;-)
Present perfect is a difficult grammar tense in English for many students. This is because we use it to describe THREE different situations.
MEANING:
In this video lesson we study the present perfect to talk about (recently) finished actions which have a connection to the present. To do this we need to use the adverbs "already, "just", and "yet".
FORM:
Subj. + have/has (+ not) + (already/just) + past participle + (yet)
[+ve] I have ALREADY eaten
[+ve] I have JUST eaten
We can see that we use the adverbs ALREADY and JUST in a positive sentence. Both adverbs mean the action was recently finished, but JUST means that it was finished a very short time ago.
[-ve] I haven't eaten YET
We can see that we use YET in a negative sentence. It means I did not do the thing...but I will do it soon or I want to do it.
[Yes/No Q] Have/has + subj. + past participle (+yet)?
e.g. Have you eaten yet?
As you can see, we also use YET to make a question. ALREADY and JUST are possible in some situations, but it is not so normal.
PRONUNCIATION:
Don't forget pronunciation! It's also very important. I look at how to pronounce this grammar construction in a natural way in this video.
