About the Speech: Latvia’s first Presidency of the Council of the EU (January-June 2015) will focus on three overarching priorities – creating a competitive Europe through sturctural reforms and growth-stimulating investment; developing the basis for a truly digital Europe; and assuming the role of a fully engaged Europe on the global stage on trade, development and geopolitical issues. In his address to the IIEA, Latvian Political Director, Eduards Stiprais, discussed these priorities and how his country aims to pursue them during its six-month term. About the Speaker: Eduards Stiprais is the Under-Secretary of State and Political Director in the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is a highly experienced diplomat, who previously served as Latvian Ambassador to the UK (2009-2013) and Permanent Representative to the EU (2004-2007). He was also the Deputy Chief Negotiator for his country’s EU accession negotiations (1999-2003).
