#Scarborough Fair is a traditional #English #folk ballad. The song tells the tale of a young woman giving her lover a series of impossible tasks before she will take him back. The melody is very typical of the middle English period. The song has similar lyrics to the #Scottish ballad The Elfin Knight, which dates back to at least 1670. By the end of the 18th century there were dozens of versions. The references to 'Scarborough Fair' and 'parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme' were added during the 19th century.
