Sealed Container Curing of Cannabis
Professor DeBacco
Limited Size of a Container
Since the containers used will be of limiting size the buds should be removed from the branches.
This may have been done during the trimming stage, but this may need some extra attention to detail to ensure only the chosen material enters the curing process.
Chosen Container
Wide-mouth mason jars are the preferred option.
A 32oz jar on average holds 1oz of dried bud.
Goal is to leave about 25% air space in the container
Also, bigger is not necessarily better, as the container gets larger the ability to ensure a controlled drying process become more challenging because of the larger volume mold has increased odds of developing.
Shake It Up
To avoid the buds from becoming a mass an occasional shaking may be advised to keep each sperate
Avoid over shaking to limit the amount of physical damage that occurs.
A Dark Place
Most containers used do not block the light completely so be sure to place your containers in a dark and cool environment
Do Not Set and Forget
The curing process should be routinely checked on
This can be very important in the early stages due to the buds containing the highest moisture content.
Burping Containers
“Burping” the containers involves opening the container a few times a day for the first week to allow moisture to escape and oxygen to replenish.
During this process check for a foul odor as this can be a sign that mold is starting to develop.
Expected Humidity Progression
Use of a hydrometer should be used to know the exact humid level of the curing environment.
The target humidity range is 60-65%
After Week 1
After the first week, the routine checks can go down from twice daily, to every day.
Weeks 2-3
If the drying process is progressing well, than you can even go to an every other day routine check.
End of Curing
Some growers use 3-weeks until final cure others up to 8-weeks until final cure.
The next step after curing is storing.
