STORYLINE:
Violent clashes erupted in Jakarta on Friday between Indonesian police and supporters of a militant cleric who was scheduled to be released from jail - and then rearrested on fresh charges.
Police said they plan to re-arrest Abu Bakar Bashir who allegedly heads the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror group after he is released on Friday.
In a bid to avoid angry confrontation with Bashir's supporters, who are camped outside the Salemba Detention Center awaiting his release, authorities tried to disperse the crowd who then began throwing stones at police and camera crews.
The supporters have vowed to take Bashir home to the town of Solo in central Java, where he runs an Islamic boarding school which counts several of the Bali bombers among its graduates.
Indonesian authorities said earlier this week that Abu Bakar Bashir would be freed Friday after serving an 18-month term for minor immigration offenses.
Last month, the Supreme Court overturned on appeal a more serious treason conviction.
But in an about-face, police announced on Thursday that they have enough evidence to prove the 66-year-old Bashir is the head of Jemaah Islamiyah.
A senior official said prosecutors will indict him on charges of approving a string of bombings dating back to 2000 that included the October 12, 2002, Bali attack which killed 202 people.
