Born in 1976, Travis Kalanick was raised in Los Angeles, California where he showed an aptitude for technology and business at a young age.

His entrepreneurial spirit became apparent when he launched his first business as a teenager, selling knives door-to-door. His early success served as fuel for his desire to upend established conventions and the status quo.

Kalanick's parents, who were jews immigrated to the U.S in the early 20th century and worked in a retail advertising company for the LA daily News.

Right from his childhood, he was very much interested in computers, so much that he began to learn how to write computer codes from middle school.
In addition to selling knives door-to-door, this very gifted young man founded his own business at the age of eighteen, which he named "New Way Academy."
Following high school, Kalanick enrolled at the University of California to study business economics and computer engineering.
Do you know the saying that great men make great decisions? Well, that best describes kalanick.
In 1998, as an undergraduate in the University of California, Kalanick dropped out of school to focus on building his startup, Scour.
At Scour, Kalanick was in charge of marketing and sales. Even though it was a fact contested by the other co-founded, Kalanick identified himself as one of the company's co-founders.
Following several months of expansion, Scour soon found itself short on funds and turned to some venture capitalists; Ronald Burkle and Michael Ovitz for support.
After some contentious discussions, Ovitz later sued Scour for breach of contract and won the case. After winning the case, Ovitz took over the company and compelled Scour to accept unfavorable conditions for the investment. Later on, this would completely dent Kalanick's understanding of the dynamic between investors and founders.
In order to restore his lost pride, in 2001, Kalanick founded another peer-to-peer file-sharing technology company called Red Shoosh.
Red Swoosh was co-founded by Kalanick and Michael Todd as a response to the lawsuit that ruined Scour, Kalanick called it his revenge business.

Well, when you mention the names Scour Inc., and Red Swoosh, Kalanick may not be the name that comes to your mind but there is one brand that clearly spells his name… UBER
