Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria, Australia. Approximately 6.7 million people live in Victoria, of whom 5.1 million are permanent residents of Greater Melbourne. This makes the metropolis the second largest city in Australia, whose residents are also called Melburnians.

The chessboard-like street network of the so-called Hoddle Grid with its historic alleys and arcades (Lanes & Arcades) is located directly in the CBD. Central to the grid is the traffic-free Bourke Street Mall, and to the west is Chinatown at the east end of Little Bourke Street.
