Elected Leader of the Liberal Democrats in 2015, Farron stood down after the General Election two years later. He has spoken openly about the challenges of balancing his political career and his Christian faith; he cited this conflict as the main reason for his decision to step down and has criticised a form of liberalism which he sees as conformist and hostile towards people of faith
