Balinese dance is known for its dynamic, expressive, and angular style. Dancers use their hands, head, eyes, and fingers to convey the stories of the dance-drama. Some popular Balinese dances include:
Kecak
A dance inspired by a trance exorcism ritual and adapted from the Ramayana epic. The performance typically features at least 150 shirtless male dancers with checkered cloth around their waists.
Barong
A popular dance and drama art form that tells the story of Barong, the force of good, and Rangda, the force of evil. Barong is dressed in a large lion costume, while Rangda is a demonic witch.
Barong and Kris
A dance that tells the story of the battle between Barong, the lion-like champion of good, and Rangda, the witch who commands the evil spirits. Dancers wear elaborate costumes of these two characters.
Topeng
A drama-dance based on stories from early kingdoms or heroines. Dancers wear paper or wooden masks and tell the stories through dance.
Pendet
A ritual dance performed in the courtyards of Balinese Hindu temples. It symbolizes purification and is performed by presenting an offering.
Baris
Also known as the War Dance, this dance is performed by adult men in a military formation at temples to celebrate Balinese warriors.
The Devdan Show at Bali Nusa Dua Theatre is another popular traditional dance show in Bali that combines dance choreography with lighting, audio, and special effects.
