Few dinosaur groups have made the impact on science, popular culture and our overall mental image of the age of dinosaurs as the ceratopsians. If the name doesn't sound familiar to you, then the dinosaurs within certainly will - these often large, often horned ornithischians were some of the toughest and most spectacular herbivores of the Mesozoic, and included the likes of Triceratops, Protoceratops, Styracosaurus and Pachyrhinosaurus, amongst many others. The group thrived in North America, Europe and Asia from one hundred and sixty one million years to sixty six million years ago, making them some of the very last dinosaurs that walked the earth before the catastrophic end Cretaceous extinction.
Many ceratopsians are known for their bizarre skull structures, which often feature various types of horns, ossifications or frills. Many of these frills were used in dramatic displays and were likely brightly coloured in life, while the horns were used in awe inspiring competitions for territory and mates. In today's video, we will be meeting some of the members of the Ceratopsia clade, examining some of the most famous genera known to man, as well as those that are yet to make their mark on the general public. This is a journey that will see us travel across the Northern Hemisphere to meet some of the most bizarre plant eaters the world has ever seen. Join us as we travel back to the Mesozoic to meet the ceratopsians: the iconic horned herbivores of the age of dinosaurs.
