Welder:
Orion 250s PLUS -- Micro pulse arc welder with microscope arm package
Settings:
The Orion 250s Plus is set to 23 watt-seconds (ws) when using a 0.015" fill wire. The machine is set to 33ws when using a 0.025" fill wire. Agitation is set to Sloped for all welds.
Fill Wire:
S-7 tool steel wire, 0.015" and 0.025"
Trials/Results:
The Orion 250s PLUS is an ideal solution for repairing molds and dies. We welded on these molds using a 0.015" wire, as well as a 0.025" wire. We used the same S-7 steel, as the fill wire, that the molds are built from. We used settings from 23ws to 33ws, depending on the wire size. When you have different-sized wires, as well as different weld requirements, weld settings that fit the application can quickly be found. The energy is simply adjusted on the touch screen. There are a few techniques that will help when performing these types of repairs on molds. It is helpful to machine out the area before welding, to ensure there is no hidden porosity. A few welds should be placed around to area to "smooth" it, before adding wire. At this point, simply introduce the fill wire at the weld spot, as the electrode sends the arc. The arc will pull the wire onto the base piece (mold) and build the area up. Edges can be built up, porosity repaired, pins extended, etc...
Outcome/Conclusion.
The Ori on 250s PLUS is a great system for repairing these types of molds. The 250s is great for steels, as well as aluminums users may work with. The swing arm microscope is a great attachment for the microscope to allow for different heights of users. Setup of the equipment is simple, and new users will be making successful welds within minutes.
