Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona announced on Friday that she would be leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an Independent, which surprised some in her party. This caused concerns over what it would mean for the slightly larger majority the party won in the 2022 midterms.
Sinema said she will not be caucusing with Republicans, which would bring the U.S. Senate back to a 50-50 split, all but ensuring the Democrats will maintain their slim majority, adding she'd continue to vote for what benefits Arizonans and Americans. She cited recent votes for the Respect for Marriage Act and the bipartisan infrastructure bill, saying her focus would be on working to solve challenges facing the country.
Later in the day, while White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre could not say if President Joe Biden was given a "heads up" before her announcement, the administration was confident they would still be able to work with Sinema on pushing through various pieces of legislation.
