The Battle for Moscow (1941–1942) was a crucial World War II confrontation where Nazi Germany launched Operation Typhoon, aiming to capture the Soviet capital and force the USSR’s surrender. Beginning in October 1941, German forces, under Field Marshal Fedor von Bock, pushed toward Moscow, overcoming fierce resistance and harsh weather.
However, the tide turned as temperatures plummeted, logistical challenges mounted, and Soviet defenses, reinforced by fresh Siberian troops familiar with winter warfare, stiffened. In early December 1941, the Red Army, commanded by General Georgy Zhukov, launched a powerful counter-offensive, exploiting Germany's overstretched and weakened lines.
The Soviet push forced the Germans into retreat, marking the first major defeat for Hitler's forces and ending their hopes of a quick victory on the Eastern Front.
