(16 Jan 2019) The head of Thailand's Immigration Police has confirmed that an imprisoned Belarusian model who claimed last year that she had evidence of Russian involvement in helping elect Donald Trump as US President, will be deported from Thailand on Thursday.
Addressing reporters in Bangkok, Maj. Gen. Surachate Hakparn said Anastasia Vashukevich - who's been in a Thai prison since February 2018 in a case relating to holding a sex training seminar - had pleaded guilty to soliciting and conspiracy and will be released.
He added that she and seven co-defendants had cooperated and volunteered to return to their home countries.
Vashukevich, also known as Nastya Rybka, earlier claimed to have recordings of Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska talking about interference in the 2016 US election, but never released them.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted her as saying that she is looking forward to a free life, although she made no comment on her allegations about Deripaska.
During Wednesday's press conference, Hakparn also commented on the case of an Australian-based refugee soccer player who is currently in detention in Thailand.
Hakeem al-Araibi, a 25-year-old former representative of Bahrain's national football team, was granted refugee status in Australia last year after fleeing his homeland, where he said he was persecuted and tortured.
He was arrested while on holiday in Thailand last month due to an Interpol notice in which Bahrain sought his custody after he had been sentenced in absentia in 2014 to ten years in prison for allegedly vandalising a police station - a charge he denies.
Hakparn said that since Al-Araibi has an outstanding arrest warrant, he has to enter the judicial process.
