2024 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Shanghai opens on Thursday. The event, equivalent to Olympics, and other top-tier figure skating competitions, hosts 112 athletes from 15 countries at Shanghai’s SPD Bank Oriental Sports Center.
Zhang Dan, Chinese former pair skater and a two-time Four Continents champion, was the highlight of the opening performance.
Figure skating is a perfect blend of sport and art, aligning well with the character of Shanghai. Skaters wear costumes representing plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum, the symbol of traditional Chinese virtues depicted in art as Four Gentlemen.
Apart from Shanghai-based performers, everything in the ceremony from costumes to songs, bears Shanghai feature.
SMG(Shanghai Media Group) presents live coverage of the opening ceremony. The championship will run from January 30th to February 4th.
Shanghai’s affection for figure skating soared after a successful World Figure Skating Championships in 2015.
