Welcome to the world of Bulgari. I'll be your guide to the 2016 Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas Collection, specifically, the Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas, an 18-karat rose gold, polished stainless steel with inset diamonds and violet dial. Historically, the art-deco inspired Serpenti half bracelet, half watch speaks to Bulgari's traditional competence in both fields. Conceived in the 1940s as a late art-deco masterpiece, the iconic Serpenti was further enhanced during the 1950s with the addition of the Tubogas-style bracelet. Essentially, eight meters of metal wound around a spring dowel, it creates a bracelet form that's sensuous, organic and beautiful.

This example features both polished 18-karat rose gold and stainless steel. In addition to an 18-karat rose gold diamond inset bezel, the watch, featuring a single-coil design, is extremely pliant and comfortable on the wrist. Also an ergonomic triumph, the quartz caliber, housed within the serpent-shaped head portion, features 3ATM (or 30m) water resistance for protection against splashes and unexpected rainfall. Its dial, which is a violet lacquer, features both dramatic soleil sunburst guilloche and hand-finished rose gold elements, including a stylized Roman numeral at 12 o'clock and the broadsword-style hands.

In fact, the dial features both guilloche cut patterns and lacquer, so that it has a deep, lustrous gloss appearance. The watch also features a rose gold crown with a rubalique cabusion. The cabusion with a deep violet color echoes the amethyst tones of the dial itself.

Again, the watch, inspired by the world of jewelry, equally competent in the world of horology, is a multi-faceted work of art in its own right. Neither precisely jewelry nor a watch, it's outstanding in each field.
