Question from the comments! "What’s the difference between a Geiko and a Geisha?"
The name differs depending on the region.
The terms “geiko” and “geisha” both refer to professionals who are fully trained in traditional performing arts. However, geiko is the term used only in Kyoto, and other places use “geisha.”
By the way, “maiko” which is the term for young girls training to become a geisha is only used in Kyoto and in other regions, the term “hangyoku” is used.
In English, it is common to call these performers maiko and geisha, however in Japanese, you will not use these two terms together.
The reason why Kyoto uses special terms is because it was the former capital where the Imperial Family lived for more than 1000 years. Maybe it has something to do with Kyoto residents wanting to distinguish themselves from others due to having high pride.
I actually have experience of being scolded for accidentally calling a geiko “geisha” when I worked as an English interpreter at an event.
