In order to change 9/12 to decimal form we need to divide 9 by 12. We know that since 9 is smaller than 12 we are going to end up with a number less than 1.

We can divide 9/12 with a calculator or do it longhand. In this video I did the division longhand (but checked my answer with a calculator). When we divide 9 by 12, we get 0.75.

So: 9/12 = 0.75
0.75 is less than 1 so that is a good way to check if our answer is reasonable. You could also multiply your answer by the denominator and you should get the numerator. In this case 0.75 x 12 = 9.

Note that 9/12 and 0.75 represent the same quantity, they are just written in different formats. 9/12 is a fraction and 0.75 is in decimal form.
