If you observe the running animation of the character in FE2, their leg will jet backwards, enabling the character to move their effective torso forwards in front of their legs. The landing animation sees the legs placed a tad in front of the torso. Thus, the increased distance of the legs allows the jump to be made whereas taking the jump sideways with shift lock will not work.
