Hermann Abendroth, conductor
London Symphony Orchestra
Recorded on March 27, 1927
in Queen's Hall, London
This is one that our listeners have talked about for years, and it seemed like a pretty good time to visit it. Although Hermann Abendroth is a not a household name his musical legacy with this symphony is considerable. His Brahms 4th, the earliest complete recording of the work, is still considered to be one the great ones.
The sound quality is impressive for 1927, and demonstrates how advanced the engineering was in the UK by that time. This nearly century old recording has noise, we left it alone as much as possible for the sake of fidelity.
