On February 3, 1959, a chartered aircraft crashed just minutes after taking off from Mason City, Iowa. Inside were Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, all of whom were killed on impact, along with the pilot. Singer Don McLean’s 1972 single ‘American Pie’ was a tribute to Holly, Valens and Richardson, and refers to the date of the tragic plane crash as “the day the music died.” McLean’s inspiration for the song’s lyrics, “February made me shiver, with every paper I’d deliver,” was personal - on the day of the crash, he was working as a newspaper delivery boy, and was delivering his route that morning when he heard the news.
