What is Parboiled Rice and How to Cook? - A Healthy Rice with Low Glycemic Index (GI)
Parboiled Basmati Rice is an Indian or Pakistani basmati rice where while still in its husk are first soaked, partially steamed, dried and milled to make light yellow colour parboiled rice.
Parboiling allows to absorb the nutrients of rice and the rice is cooked into a firmer, less sticky rice than regular basmati rice.
Both white rice and parboiled rice are quite similar, yet different. They are both extra-long grain rice, but the difference comes from how it is processed.
The processing method for parboiled rice adds a more yellow color and has a stronger taste than regular white rice.
Normal rice is processed to only contain the starchy part of the grain called the endosperm.
Consuming parboiled rice is considered help lower blood sugar levels and manage the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Cooking Parboiled rice is easy but it will take extra 15 minutes than the normal white rice.
The Parboiled rice will also need 1:3 rice to water ratio for cooking.
Parboiled rice cannot sticky usually. At times, undercooking the parboiled rice could be an issue with the type of rice, cooker used and amount of water used
If the parboiled rice is over cooked, unlike regular rice, it will not turn mush
Parboiled rice is especially good for cook and drain method or traditional pot cooking
Use long grain basmatic rice and they are good
Parboiled rice has more nutrients than normal basmati rice. Today I am sharing my way of cooking the perfect parboiled rice.
Cooking:
Ingredients:
1 cup long grain raw basmati parboiled rice
3 Cups of water
Instructions:
Step 1:
Take 1 cup rice. Wash and rinse the rice until the water is almost clear.
Step 2:
Using a small rice cooker, tip the rice, add the water and turn on the rice cooker.
Step 3:
When the rice cooker indicate the rice is cooked in about 20 minutes, meep it warm in the rice cooker until serve
If pot cooking and draining method is used, add the rice when the water comes to a rolling boil.
After adding the rice, cover and cook for 25 minutes. Use thumb test Cook fir add the rice, let it come to a ed to add salt and oil.
No need to add any spices. This will be a plain rice cooking.
Cook the rice on medium-high heat for 25 minutes.
To see whether rice is cooked. Take few cooked rice grain and gently press them between the index and thumb fingers.
If the rice is cooked, the cooked rice will be soft and little mashy.
Drain the water from the cooked rice.
Let the cooking pot on the stove do that the remaining water can evaporate.
Return the rice to the pan and cover. Keep the rice covered for at least 15 minutes before serving.
If you undercook it, all you have to do is add hot water and let it cook some more, and it will not stick together.
