If it's wrong to wreck the planet and threaten millions of lives, then it's wrong to profit from it. By investing billions of dollars of its endowment in the fossil fuel industry, Stanford literally profits from climate change and supports the industry that is primarily responsible.
Poor and marginalized communities who have contributed the least to climate change will be impacted first and most powerfully by its effects. This is a moral crisis. In our place of privilege at Stanford, we cannot be complacent in allowing our university to take part.
After three years of students, faculty, and alum calling upon Stanford's Board of Trustees to divest from fossil fuels, it is time to take Direct Action to bring about change. Join us this Monday at 1pm in White Plaza to unambiguously demand that Stanford divest from petroleum and natural gas companies.
Looked to as a leader and a socially progressive institution, it is Stanford's moral obligation to divest from fossil fuels. The movement is building. The stakes are high and the crisis has become urgent. The time is now.
We are taking a stand against an industry that exploits already marginalized communities. We're taking a stand for a vision of our future in which people, not corporations, have the power. We're taking a stand for a safe and just global climate, and we're demanding that our University stand with us. JOIN US to #DivestStanford
