Imagine having a fortune sitting right on your doorstep, but you’re not allowed to reach out and grab it. For Welshman James Howells, this has been his reality for nearly 10 years, when in 2013 he threw away a hard drive with 7,500 Bitcoins on it.

He had purchased the Bitcoins in 2009 for next to nothing, and had left the harddrive to gather dust at the back of a drawer before accidentally throwing it away during a clear out.

When he threw away the hard drive in 2013, his collection was worth $6.7 million, whereas today - in his local landfill in Newport - he knows there is well over a quarter of a billion dollars just waiting to be retrieved.

Despite offering to donate 25% of the fortune to the local council, they have flat-out refused him access to the landfill as it is against their licensing permit legislation.
