Last month, iQ Student Accommodation Collingwood Newcastle invited me back to uni to experience a 'refreshers' week.
I studied genetics at Dundee University in 2002 and stayed in halls there for my first year. Things have changed A LOT in the past 16 years and I was surprised at just how much student accommodation has changed!

🌅 ROOF TERRACE - there was no access to a communal garden for me back in 2002 but now, iQ Student Accommodation (Collingwood) offers a roof terrace (with views of the Tyne Bridge) and outdoor terrace with seating and giant chess.
🙇STUDY - In 2002, I'd study in my room or the library. I love that iQ Collingwood offers a communal study area that is designed to feel like a coffee shop. There are individual booths and large tables to share group work.
♻️ RECYCLE - Recycling wasn't on the agenda at all when I was a student so I was pleased to see that iQ Collingwood had it's own recycle centre and there was a drop off point for charity donations too.
🎬 TV - We had one TV for the whole of our building back in 2002. It was in an old-fashioned lounge that reminded me of a hospital waiting room. At iQ Accommodation, students now have access to a flat screen TV on every floor in a mini lounge area AND a private cinema room which can be hired free of charge (the surround sound is epic!).
🎮 GAMING - In 2002, one of us would drag our Playstation (probably an original Playstation!) down to the communal lounge and hope nobody was watching TV if we wanted a gaming session. Now, there are PS4 gaming booths, pool tables and ping pong as standard at iQ Collingwood.
☕️COFFEE - Kettle and instant was all we had back in the day (and probably a shop's own brand if I'm honest). Now, students have a coffee machine in their communal area.
👩💻COMPUTER - I had a laptop that I needed to plug into my phone line and pay extra for in halls. It was painfully slow too! Now, high speed WiFi is included with your room rate and it works a treat.
RECREATION - One thing I will say about 2002 is that there were plenty of clubs and societies to join and that seems to have stayed pretty consistent. There are lots of options including social events organised on the rooftop terrace, summer BBQs and I found a lovely Pay As You Feel Yoga class across the road from iQ Collingwood.
Check out my video and let me know if you'd like to go back to being a student.
