Let me paint a picture for you. You’re an online anti-social justice warrior behind a keyboard who needs to touch grass. You’re worried about the significant and growing backlash against historical institutions, ideas, beliefs, groups and even words on the basis that the aforementioned list are bigoted and hurtful to the marginalised and that they must be removed and slowly transitioned away from society. You’re concerned the scope of what you could actually say in public is slowly closing. Things like political correctness and cancel culture are concepts that come to mind for this. Then you have another more progressive keyboard warrior, who similar to you may need to get out of the house, more or less approves this backlash to stop so-called bigotry. Out of desperation, you start to claim your Free Speech is under attack. The visibly annoyed progressive sighs and retorts "your free speech isn't under attack since the government isn't censoring what you say. Freedom of Speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences. Besides, what you are saying is dangerous". A beloved friend of the channel Sam Seder himself is no stranger to calling others hateful.
But more on him later. On this particular issue, I have personally found it hard to understand the side that wants to limit hate speech. Of course bigotry is bad in all its forms, but I've always considered the measures used within political correctness and cancel culture to be excessive and arguably more dangerous than the miniscule hate speech that they want to clamp down on. But then one breadtuber managed to articulate the core of the progressive argument quite well.
