John: Hey guys. John here from etrailer.com. Today we have our 2019 Toyota RAV4 in and we are test fitting the Konig K-Summit XXL tire chains. These tire chains have a manganese nickel alloy steel construction, which is going to be very durable and it's going to last us a long time. We have D-links, which are more efficient than say coils. These do a better job of breaking up the ice and getting us through snow than something with coils that has just a little bit of traction for us.
And then the diamond pattern is going to give us a more even ride quality. So something like a ladder chain. It's going to be a little more clumpy, where you're going to, it feels like you're just going over bumps or since this is nice and consistent, it's not going to be as jolting.These parts here, they look like brackets but they're actually icebreakers and so not only do we get the D-links that do a good job of getting us through the ice, but these help to break it up initially. Again, just gives us an easier time getting through it. We also have these bolts here and depending on your tire size, we can refer to our instructions on how many we might need to remove or maybe not remove at all and it helps us to get the correct tension for our tire chains.
One of the biggest benefits to this tire chain is how much it's used to protect your tires and your wheels. So the chain only mounts on top of our tread. There's nothing behind our wheel, which is great for the low clearance applications, Class S compatible.We also have right here, these are plastic. It's a very durable plastic so it's not going to break while we're driving with the chains on but it also, since it's plastic, we don't have to worry about it hurting our rubber tires. When we move down here, we can see there is no wheel contact.
The only part that's contacting our wheel, it's really just our lug nut, not our wheel. So we know we can be confident that our wheel is going to be in great shape when we're done with these chains.The K-Summit XXL tire chains come with a nice carrying case so when we put our chains away in the back of our car, we don't have to worry about all that mud and snow getting into our car. The instructions have a nice laminate finish, so we can be confident if we put this down in the elements. It's still going to function properly. It's not going to ruin the book.
We also have some other pieces here. We have extra bolts and spacers and different lug nut adapters depending on what size you have for your wheel. There's also plastic gloves in case we forget to bring some and the kneeling mat we put on the ground to help keep our clothes nice and clean.Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's go ahead and install it together. One of the first things we do when we're installing these is to find out which of these adapters is the best fit for our lug nuts. For this specific vehicle, our hubcap actually prevents us from installing this. So we're going to have to remove the hubcap first. It just pops out. Now we're ready to install it. This is something to keep in mind. I'm not sure if it will be the same case with all RAV4s, but you will need to keep that in mind that this will need to be removed to install this tire chain.Before we put our chains on our tires, we need to refer to our installation instructions to see if any of these bolts need to be removed. The tire size we have on our RAV4 is 225/65-17 and the instructions say we need to remove one of these. So you use two tools for this. We have this tool and this tool. Put one on that end and the other one on the nut. Loosen it. These do have a type of thread locker on it that keep them in place. So it is a little bit difficult to move at first, but regardless it does need to be removed. And what this bolt does is it keeps some of the tension on the tire chain. And so depending on the tire size, that's why you might need to remove more than one. You might need to not have to remove any. So that's what the installation instructions are best for to help you determine that.As I'm removing this, there's a small nut. It's in this tool right now. We also have a spring, a spacer and another spring. So when we remove this, we need to be really careful that we don't lose any of these parts. This isn't something you're going to do out on the road because you're going to want to get all of this configured prior to installing these when you're out. So I recommend once you get this tire chain to figure out all the adjustments you need so that way you can just toss it on when we're out in the elements.With the
