For more than half a century, the US has been the Philippines' only military ally. However, the Philippines announced on Feb 11 that it had sent to the US embassy in Manila a notice to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). The pact allows US forces on Philippine soil, and some 300 joint military exercises every year are at stake. The notice of termination jump starts a 180-day period wherein both parties can still save the deal. Philippines senators have voiced concern and argued that the senate should be able to review and vote on the termination.
