The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 is a Soviet-designed, single-engine, swing-wing fighter aircraft. It was first flown in 1967 and entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1970. The MiG-23 was designed as a multirole fighter that could perform both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, and it was one of the first Soviet aircraft to feature a look-down, shoot-down radar system.
The MiG-23 was widely exported and saw service in numerous air forces around the world, including countries in the Soviet-aligned Eastern Bloc, the Middle East, and Africa. The aircraft was involved in numerous conflicts, including the Gulf War, the Soviet-Afghan War, and the Iran-Iraq War.
The MiG-23 was known for its high speed and agility, and it was considered a highly capable fighter in its time. However, it was also criticized for its unreliable engine and avionics, and its performance in air-to-air combat was often questioned. Nevertheless, the MiG-23 remained in service with many air forces for several decades, and it continues to be used by a few countries today.
The MiG-23 was one of the last designs developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich before the company merged with another Soviet aircraft manufacturer to form the Mikoyan-Gurevich-Zhukovsky Design Bureau, which later became the Mikoyan Design Bureau. The aircraft has had a lasting impact on military aviation and is considered one of the most significant Soviet fighter designs of the Cold War era.
