Record-Setting Stingray Discovered and Returned to Mekong River in Cambodia
A 661-pound stingray, considered the heaviest freshwater fish on record, was caught on June 13 and released back into the Mekong River in Cambodia the next day, according to researchers.
The female, named Boramy – meaning “full moon” in Khmer, the native language of Cambodia – was released back into the river after being electronically tagged to allow scientists to monitor her movement and behavior.
This footage was captured by Wonders of the Mekong, a USAID-funded project that “aims to improve understanding, appreciation, and capacity to manage a healthy Mekong River for fish, wildlife, and people,” according to its YouTube channel.
