This video provides a brief introduction to Nietzsche’s epistemology of perspectivism using his work, Beyond Good and Evil. In the first chapter, he starts by noting how the truths that philosophers have reached are not without prejudice. Philosophers will try to remove values from their theories and yet Nietzsche still certain assumptions being made. For example, Nietzsche critiques Descartes’ cogito ergo sum or the “I think, therefore I am” statement. Nietzsche is able to note many different assumptions inherent in the statement “I think”.
Instead of a view of truth from a neutral objective standpoint, Nietzsche recognizes that interpretation and values play a role, leading to his epistemology of perspectivism. Perspectivism recognizes that we’re going to view things from our perspective and that there is no real objective universal truth. But that’s not to say Nietzsche is a relativist. Perspectivism doesn’t judge all assertions as equal, which means there’s room for debate, argumentation, and discussion amongst these different viewpoints. #nietzsche #beyondgoodandevil #perspectivism
