Logline:
“A thought-provoking exploration of the clash between banking systems and the crypto culture who believe that the next economic era should be inspired by Satoshi Nakamoto’s vision.”
Synopsis:
Follow Alex Moldovan, a third year BA Film student, on a research journey to explore the world of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology in response to Mark Carney’s 2018 speech about the future of money. The film begins with the Bank of England governors’ speech, which marked the first time a central bank recognized the potential threat of cryptocurrencies.
Alex Moldovan interviews a diverse group of contributors, including blockchain researchers, code developers and crypto entrepreneurs, to understand the complexities of this emerging field. Along the way, the film raises critical questions about the crucial aspect of trust when switching to crypto but also how a decentralized economy could benefit in pressing social objectives, such as tackling social inequality and combating climate change.
Theme
In today’s economy, where interest rates and inflation are on the rise and physical cash is falling out of favour, the question raised by central banks is if the bulk of money should go digital. The proliferation of decentralised finance and its irresistible value proposition, offering returns of 10-20% yield is pushing traditional financial institutions to reconsider their position. But what are the implications of this shift towards digital currencies to our everyday lives? This is the question that it needs to be answered as we move towards this increasingly digitized financial landscape.
