Robert Du Preez broke the mold of a typical scrumhalf in the late 1980's. He was bigger and stronger than any of his predecessors and his box kicks and grubbers from the base of the scrum always ensured the Bulls are on the front foot. He started his career in Potchefstroom, playing for Western Transvaal before moving to Pretoria where he played for Northern Transvaal between 1988 and 1991. At the Bulls, he was in his prime and arguably the best scrumhalf in South Africa, but it wasn't until his move to Natal in 1992 that he became a Springbok.
He made his debut for South Africa in the famous return test against New Zealand at Ellispark in 1992. He would play 7 tests in total between 1992 and 1993 before being overtaken by Joost van der Westhuizen as South Africa's premier scrumhalf.
All said, Robert Du Preez is a SA Rugby legend who provided some great entertainment in his day.
Here are some of his highlights. Enjoy, and thanks for watching!
